Kid-Approved Summer Meals

August 6, 2018

There aren't many people I know who love slaving around in a hot kitchen during the summer. Quit contrary, I know many people, including yours truly, who desperately avoids cooking during the hot summer days. Over the years, I've realized a meal template to help you and your little ones beat the heat and stay out of the kitchen.

It's actually quite simple. You don't need fancy kitchenware, and it's not smoothies that I'm referring to, although smoothies are always a great go to. It's one my family has been following for a few years now. Here's a common meal list during the summertime days in the Hamilton household:

Breakfast: Cut up watermelon and cantaloupe placed in a large bowl on the dining table for the kids to grab as they awake and retreat downstairs to fill their bellies.

Lunch: Either sautéed or steamed broccoli placed on a cutting board on the dining table next to a big batch of fresh strawberries and blueberries for the kids to freely eat.

Snack: Homemade popcorn, apples, tomatoes, or popsicles.

Dinner: Steamed or sautéed string beans stirred into pasta

Our main staple is actually fruit and vegetables, believe it or not. We change up the produce as we feel. Sometimes, there's papaya, honeydew melon, grapes...on the table. My three-year-old adores simple bowls of plain avocado! If you can incorporate more produce into your life, it would be a lot easier to create meals during the summertime. It's not always as such in our household as it only is from late Spring till the cold chill comes around in late autumn. From late autumn, I am obsessed with vegetable soups and french bread.

You may think that purchasing fruits and vegetables is out of your budget however, there are Dollar Stores that are now carrying produce at amazing prices. Furthermore, if you keep a look out, there are amazing sales on melons, strawberries, blueberries and corn in the summer. Right now in my local grocery store there are ninety-nine cent cantaloupes!

Keep your kitchen clean and cool in the summertime! Leaving out trays of chopped fresh fruit and steamed veggies as opposed to individual plates will also lessen the cleanup time as you won't have many dishes to clean.

So, relax and decide what book you're gonna read with the extra time you'll have.
